HOWTEK LAUNCHES NEW SCANMASTER 7000 PRO SERIES COLOR SCANNER & AURORA SCANNING APPLICATION AT SEYBOLD, SAN FRANCISCO

High End Drum Scanner Challenges Traditional Color Scanning
Systems Both in Price & Productivity
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Howtek, Inc. (AMEX: HTK) announced today the introduction of its newest member to the Scanmaster family of scanners, the Scanmaster(TM) 7000 Pro Series featuring Aurora, an integrated color scanning application for the Scanmaster 7000. Targeted at large volume color separators, trade shops and commercial printers, the combination of the Scanmaster 7000 and Aurora provides users with the quality and productivity of a high end color scanning system. Ken Cloud, Howtek's president said, "Since the introduction of the Scanmaster D4000, our end users and channel partners have been driving us to extend our products upwards into the high end of the graphic arts market. The introduction of the Scanmaster 7000 reaffirms our commitment to practical engineering and product line expansion. The Scanmaster 7000 Pro Series is the top-of-the-line of our Scanmaster family and delivers the ultimate in quality and productivity while establishing an entirely new price threshold for this product category."
Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Steve Abbey stated, "The Scanmaster 7000 represents an entirely fresh approach to the idea of a high-end scanner. It assumes from the beginning that it will be integrated into a system environment and, with our unique Aurora software, provides the industry the first 'host-based' scanning environment with all control originating at the workstation."
Features of the Scanmaster 7000 include a scanning area of up to 18.5" x 24", reflective, transparent, positive and negative image scanning, enlargement capabilities from 10 percent - 3000 percent, hardware based UCR, GCR and USM and standard SCSI-2 interface. "The 7000 offers an integrated color computer which in combination with Aurora, divides the processing between the scanner and host computer, thus reducing job time and increasing overall throughput," said Mike Demers, Scanner Product Manager.
With the Aurora color scanning module, all scanning functions are automatically controlled by intuitive on-screen operator options at the workstation. Image enhancement and color correction features include automatic highlight and shadow setting, auto balance, color-selective unsharp masking and cast removal. Additional features include on-the-fly unsharp masking and CMYK separation, automatic or interactive on-screen focus, and gang or batch scanning.
Initial shipments of the Scanmaster 7000 are scheduled to begin in Q1 '94. Pricing has been set at $69,995. Initial units will be offered on the Macintosh(R) and PC platforms with UNIX compatibility to follow.
Howtek was founded in 1984 by Robert Howard who was also founder and chairman of Centronics Data Computer Corporation. Howtek designs and engineers color flatbed and drum scanners for the graphic arts and desktop publishing markets.
