HOWARD ELECTED TO NWNL COMPANIES' BOARD OF DIRECTORS AT ANNUAL MEETING; THREE DIRECTORS RE-ELECTED

MINNEAPOLIS, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Shareholders of the NWNL Companies (NYSE: NWN) elected James J. Howard, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Northern States Power (NSP), to the NWNL board of directors at the NWNL annual meeting on May 13.
Re-elected to three-year terms were Jaye F. Dyer, president of Dyer Management Co.; Richard M. Kovacevich, president and chief executive officer of Norwest Corp.; and Glen D. Nelson, vice chairman of Medtronic Inc.
In other action at the annual meeting, shareholders approved NWNL's 1993 Stock Incentive Plan and ratified the appointment of Deloitte & Touche as the company's independent auditors.
In his remarks at the meeting, NWNL Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer John G. Turner said, "We established six priorities in 1991, and we've made great progress toward them due to sound strategies and the commitment of our people in making these strategies work.
"With this solid foundation to build upon, we are now focusing on meeting the needs and exceeding the expectations of customers in markets where we are strongest," he said. "I'm confident that we will be as successful in this regard as we've been in reaching our initial priorities."
John H. Flittie, NWNL's chief operating officer, characterized 1993 as a year of growing distribution and increasing sales for the company. In his remarks at the meeting, he reported sales highlights for the first quarter of 1993, which included new sales records in three operations. He illustrated the company's sales activities with examples from its various business operations.
 R. Michael Conley, senior vice president of the Employee Benefits Division of Northwestern National Life, addressed the issue of health care reform in his presentation at the meeting. He reviewed components that the Clinton Administration's Healthcare Task Force is likely to include in its final recommendation and discussed some of the major issues that are yet to be resolved. Regardless of the final health care reform legislation, he said, NWNL is well positioned for success in the employee benefits business.
Commenting on Howard's election to the board, Turner said, "I am pleased to welcome Mr. Howard to our board of directors. He understands the insurance business well from previous involvement on the boards of other insurers, and, of course, he also brings many years of experience as a leader in both business and community affairs. I am confident that his contributions to NWNL will be valuable."
Howard has been with NSP since 1987. NSP is a Minneapolis-based electric and gas utility that serves 1.7 million customer accounts in five states. Prior to joining NSP, he was president and chief operating officer of Ameritech, and earlier in his career, he was chairman and chief executive officer of Wisconsin Telephone (now Wisconsin Bell).
Howard is a director of NSP, Ecolab, Honeywell and Walgreen Co. His civic affiliations include the Council for Community-Based Development, the Minnesota Business Partnership, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the United Negro College Fund, and the United Way of Minneapolis.
In addition, Howard is on the board of trustees for the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.; the board of overseers of the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management; and the board of visitors for the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh.
The NWNL Companies is a Minneapolis-based holding company specializing in the life and health insurance and annuity businesses.
