On Friday, 15-year-old Danny, who just completed a team-MVP and All- Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County.  Matt, 13, reclaimed the family bragging rights with one of the area's best junior scores of this or any season, shooting 8-under-par 62 in winning a Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Matt, who will start his freshman year at Royal in September, will join his brother in the Optimist Junior World Championship at the end of this month by virtue of a 73 in his age division of last week's qualifying tournament at Balboa.

But the memory of Matt's 62 on Tuesday might eclipse any national final as far as family patriarch Rich Hoffenberg is concerned.

``That's really a special score,'' Hoffenberg said of his son's eight-birdie, no-bogey performance on the same course where eventual U.S. Junior Amateur champion Henry Liaw shot 58 as a 12-year-old in 1998.

Liaw's 58 remains tied for the Alhambra GC record and is the Southern California PGA Junior Tour record, and Matt's 62 stands as the Hoffenberg family record - for now.

Danny plays to a 1.5 handicap index at difficult Wood Ranch in Simi Valley, where Matt plays to a 2.3 and Rich a 2.5. Ryan Hoffenberg, the family's youngest son, plays to what Rich guesses is a handicap of 45. But Ryan is only 6 years old and just taking up the game.

His brothers have taken to it in a big way. Each has been a player of the year in his division of the Ventura County Junior Golf program the past two years - both winning more than 10 tournaments in those seasons.

They have combined for three other Ventura County tournament titles this year and today are playing in Des Moines, Iowa “Des Moines” redirects here. For other uses, see Des Moines (disambiguation).

Two weeks ago, Kanew proved Knight right, winning the club title by 25 strokes over Lynn Edelson in a competition that left the 78-year-old Knight in third place.

A year earlier, Knight was finishing with heroics, holing her final shot out of the bunker to win the El Cab title in a sixth decade. This time, she wound up demonstrating graciousness.

``She's very good, really in a class by herself,'' Knight said of Kanew, who plays to a handicap of less than 5. ``I didn't play very well. I'm in the process of changing my swing.
