HOW DID YOUR SCHOOL FARE?; EXAM RESULT LEAGUE TABLES: OUR EASY-TO-UNDERSTAND GUIDE TO THE BEST AND THE WORST PERFORMANCES AROUND THE COUNTRY.AN ABERDEEN secondary is today named Scotland's most successful state school. In a record year for Higher passes, Cults Academy pipped Bearsden Academy in Glasgow, Mearns Castle in East Renfrewshire, and Banchory Academy in Aberdeenshire, for the top spot. Tobermory High in Argyll was Scotland's most improved school over the past three years. Maxwelltown High and Castle Douglas High, both in Dumfriesshire, also performed much better than in previous years. More than 130,000 candidates sat nearly three million papers in 44 subjects at Standard Grade and Higher level this spring. Pass rates for Highers rose half a per cent to 69 per cent - the most ever - and the number getting A grades is up from 15.3 to 15.7 per cent. Our tables show the percentage of pupils per school who passed three or more Highers and five or more Standard Grades. The figures show that 50 per cent of pupils at Cults passed three or more Highers at band A-C compared with a national average of 20. Head teacher Graeme Traill said: "It was an excellent year. Like all schools, we are trying to ensure each youngster makes genuine progress." At Tobermory, 47 per cent of pupils passed three or more Highers - 26 per cent more than in 1996. Head teacher Jenny des Fountain said: "I am really proud of the school's exam achievements this year. A lot of it is down to the hard work of teachers and pupils." But she warned: "These league tables do need to have a health warning. We need to look at each child as an individual. Scottish office figures really just stimulate our thinking about it." In Glasgow, Hyndland was the most successful inner city secondary but was outperformed by schools in the suburbs of Bearsden and Newton Mearns. Bearsden Academy head David Gordon said: "Our youngsters have performed at a very high level and I believe that reflects a great deal of effort in the school." Ian Climie, head of Mearns Castle High, said: "We have had a very good year indeed. The extra study classes we have introduced for pupils have worked very well." Jim McAlpine, head of Bannockburn High, the fifth most improved in Scotland according to the Higher results, said: "Schools are working flat out to do their very best for their pupils but there are so many factors which these results don't measure." William Johnston, head of Aberdeen Grammar, the tenth best school on Higher results, said: "There is no one single factor which explains the success. "We want a co-operative ethos where we encourage everyone to do their best." Douglas Marr, head of the 900-pupil Banchory Academy, the third best school in Scotland, said: "Obviously we are pleased that we are doing well but would treat these figures with a degree of caution." Headteachers in Dumfries and Galloway Dumfries and Galloway (Dùn Phris agus an Gall-Ghaidhealaibh in Gaelic) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. To the north, it borders onto South Ayrshire, East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire; in the east the Borders; and to the south the county of Cumbria in England. were yesterday refusing to discuss the tables - even though schools in the region have been shown to be some of the best. Castle Douglas High and Dalbeattie High both feature in our league table of Scotland's top schools, while Maxwelltown High in Dumfries is the second most improved. A council spokeswoman said: "It has been decided among the heads that none will be speaking about the results on the basis that all schools in the area are doing a good job." Scottish Education Minister Helen Liddell welcomed the results but said: "We must all act to push standards even higher over the next few years. "All secondary schools will have set three-year targets to achieve even better examination results." Judith Gillespie, of the Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association Founded in 1944, the Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association (SSTA) is Scotland's second largest teachers' union, set up to focus on secondary issues, initially as a reaction to the perception of undue influence exercised on national education issues at that time by the primary , said: "The results show the success of the comprehensive system, which selects people in rather than out, and presents them with more opportunities." Scotland's top private school was St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh. Among local authorities, East Renfreswshire was Scotland's most successful. The key to our tables is: * - Do GCEs; - Do A levels; ** - Fewer than five candidates presented for Highers.
