HOUSE OKS VAST MILITARY BUDGET.Byline: Lisa Friedman Washington Bureau The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a massive military budget that includes millions of dollars for Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, weapons and space programs. The record $416.9 billion defense spending bill passed 403-17 and incorporates President Bush's $50 billion request to continue funding military operations This is a list of missions, operations, and projects. Southern California projects funded in the bill include: --$50 million for B-2 bomber upgrades and replacing military communications Military communications, or Signals, is a field of military activities, tactics and equipment dealing with communications. First of all, military communications are battlefield (combat) communications, including intercommunication with a higher command or country's programs at Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. . --$6.5 million for a warfare program at Point Mugu. --$4 million for a program in Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, to develop a new generation of combat vehicles. --$1 million for the Griffith Observatory Griffith Observatory is located in Los Angeles, California, United States. Sitting on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in L.A.'s Griffith Park, it commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the to develop astronomy and space exploration exhibits. Rep. Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Thousand Oaks, who secured the Point Mugu funding and about $13 million in other projects in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, called local cities ``key players in our nation's national security.'' Millions of dollars also went to local defense contractors and other Southern California companies. Gallegly secured $1.4 million for Thousand Oaks-based Rockwell Scientific to create infrared imaging sensors to be used in guiding missiles and other smart weaponry. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena, obtained $3 million for the Pasadena-based Smiths Detection Co. to develop chemical weapons sensors and another $3 million for Phasebridge Inc., also in Pasadena, to develop a new radar frequency distribution system.
