HOUGHTON MIFFLIN COMPANY ANNOUNCES PLAN TO SPIN OFF SOFTWARE DIVISION

 BOSTON, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Houghton Mifflin Company (NYSE: HTN) announced today that it intends to transfer the assets, business, and employees of its software division to a newly formed company, Infosoft International, Inc., which will offer shares to the public. As currently contemplated, Houghton Mifflin will hold a significant minority interest in the new company after completion of the offering.
 The proposed offering will be made only by means of a prospectus after a registration statement covering the common stock to be offered has been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
 Houghton Mifflin is a leading publisher of textbooks, instructional technology, assessments, and other educational materials for the elementary and secondary school and college markets, as well as an extensive line of reference publications, and fiction and nonfiction for adults and young readers.
