HOUGHTON MIFFLIN COMPANY ANNOUNCES ELECTRONIC CO-PUBLISHING PARTNERSHIP WITH SONY ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING COMPANY

BOSTON, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Houghton Mifflin Company (NYSE: HTN) announced today a partnership agreement with Sony Electronic Publishing Company, New York, to produce CD-ROM multimedia software. This co-publishing effort will begin by developing and then producing a CD-ROM version of a college text, "The Challenge of Democracy: Government in America, Fourth Edition," by Kenneth Janda, Jeffrey Berry, and Jerry Goldman, which will be published in 1994. It will include the text and illustrations from the book plus approximately 60 minutes of full-motion video, audio, and materials for student research projects. The instructional design and interface will be supplied by International Management Group of Newton, Mass.
Nader F. Darehshori, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "Houghton Mifflin has made great strides in employing technology to reduce costs and increase efficiency. While this effort is ongoing, the company is now intensifying its focus on electronic product development. Our key advantage in this area is our expertise and ownership of content. To be successful, electronic products must offer high quality content accessibly presented; many technology companies have acknowledged this and are looking for superior content to fill the electronic pipeline. Houghton Mifflin's divisions are taking advantage of this opportunity to offer electronic products that customers really want. This co-publishing partnership with Sony to produce CD-ROM-based multimedia software is an excellent example of the type of alliance we seek and the type of electronic product we are producing."
Michael E. Melody, executive vice president, college and software publishing, said, "As we all know, the 1990s are the decade of alliances. The key to success, of course, is the quality of these working relationships and of the products and services they create. We are confident that our joint effort with Sony brings together the quality of authorship, content, publishing expertise, and technology which will result in an electronic educational and informational publication second to none, and one which will set the standard for our future efforts."
