HOT TIPS : FOSSILS FACE FACTS.

Fossil's retro marketing assault first targeted America's wrists with sleek watches, then moved on to shoulders and hip pockets with leather wallets and purses. Now they're going straight for the face - eyeglasses eyeglasses or spectacles, instrument or device for aiding and correcting defective sight. Eyeglasses usually consist of a pair of lenses mounted in a frame to hold them in position before the eyes. .

And the Fossil frames do look pretty cool. Fossil advertising borrows heavily from the '50s, but the frames and matching sunglasses clips look nothing like the horned-rim glasses of yesteryear yes·ter·year

. There are 20 frames, including 11 ``unisex looks,'' four women's styles, four children's frames and one men's.

The price is comparable to other designer frames: Roughly $100 for the frames and another $40 for an optional sunglasses clip.

When the bottoms are tops

It's not enough that parents have to cope with the latest toy craze, now they have to worry if their child's diapers are in style.

Target stores are to blame. They've introduced Show-Offs, a new product they're calling an ``upscale brand of diapers, designed with fashion in mind.''

Fashion and diapers? When I think of my 15-month-old son's diapers, I think functional.

Not anymore. Show-Offs come in sizes 2 through 5; each package includes various colors with designs - pastels dotted with stars, for example - that will change periodically to reflect the latest trends in fashion.

As far as functional goes, Show-Offs passed the poo-poo test. (Yes, I really tested them.)

Frankly, plain white diapers are just as effective, but if you insist on dressing your little one in ``fashion diapers,'' prepare to pay $4.99 for a package of 21. That may sound a little steep but, hey, fashion doesn't come cheap.

In this mess, who's got room for a calendar?

Easy, says Andrews McMeel Publishing, distributors of the brand-new, multifunctional Mental Block.

It's a calendar. It's a toy. It's a paperweight. It's art and function rolled into one Adj. 1. rolled into one - made up of several components combined into a single entity
