Locals to get V.C. Hall of Fame nods

Several area coaches and athletes from past and present will be inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame this summer.

Among the inductees will be Westlake football and track and field coach Jim Benkert, former Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  basketball star Michelle Palmisano and former Cal Lutheran track and field star Troy Kuretich.

Female and male athletes of the year from each of the county's 29 high school and Cal Lutheran will also be recognized at a June 10 banquet.

This year's male honorees include Royal of Simi Valley's cross country and track standout Michael Cybulski and Thousand Oaks' Eric Kanney, who played football and wrestled for the Lancers lanc·er

Auburn lands Sylla of Stoneridge Prep

Stoneridge Prep of Simi Valley announced that 7-foot-1 Boubacar Sylla has signed to play basketball at Auburn.

Sylla is a consensus top-150 player. He at times was overshadowed by his other 7-foot teammates Mamadou Diarra (USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. ) and Ibrahima Thomas (Oklahoma State).He is one of nine players at Stoneridge to commit to a Division I school this year.

Valencia wins titles

Valencia's Jack Zapala defeated Hart of Newhall's Otto DeGrieff 6-3, 7-5 to capture the singles title at the Foothill League boys' tennis tournament Tuesday.
