Although there are numerous signing periods for college sports, this is the one that is most followed. It always falls on the first Wednesday in February.  -- among the biggest sports days of the year in prep circles.

``This is a really proud moment. It's just a happy day,'' said Marshall Jones, an Oaks Christian High of Westlake Village safety who'll join teammate Marc Tyler Marc Tyler (born September 27, 1988 in Palmdale, California) is an American football running back for the University of Southern California Trojans football team. Jones signed during a ceremonial luncheon in Thousand Oaks that included 10 of his teammates.

Tyler, ranked as the nation's top running back, was mobbed by reporters and cameramen as he signed his scholarship papers.

``It's kind of sad that it's over but I'm sure I'm going to the right place,'' said Moorpark lineman George Halamandaris, who's headed to Stanford. ``I've got a lot of memories from Moorpark. It's been a lot of +fun but I think I'm ready to move on.''

San Diego State-bound Logan Ketchum of Oak Park agreed.

``I'm really happy but I'm sure I'll look back later and miss high school,'' he said.

Perhaps none were more eager to make their college choice official than Westlake defensive lineman Tyrone Duncan, who broke a verbal committment to Fresno State to pick Washington, which came through with a late offer that was too good to pass up.

``I committed to Fresno State but it just didn't work out. I felt Washington was the right place for me,'' Duncan said. ``I took four trips and Washington was the place that fit best for me. It's over now, and I'm ready.''

    Yates becomes a Ram

Dejuan Yates, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound offensive lineman at Thousand Oaks High, signed a football scholarship with Colorado State. Yates' blocking helped Thousand Oaks (7-4) reach the Northern Division playoffs this past season. He also totaled 24 tackles and one sack.

Just in the kick of time

Defending City Section boys' soccer champion Birmingham High of Lake Balboa is hitting its stride just in time for the playoffs. The Patriots enter tonight's West Valley League finale against Taft with a five-game undefeated streak, including a 4-0 upset of first-place El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

of Woodland Hills on Tuesday. Birmingham had knocked Chatsworth out of first place last week with a 2-1 victory over the Chancellors.

``We're just starting to peak,'' said Patriots coach E.B. Madha, whose team won just two of its first six games. ``We didn't have a lot of practice or very many games at the beginning of the season. We're still very young, we're mostly freshmen and sophomores, but they're playing decent right now.''

Sophomore Gustavo Villalobos took his turn stepping up with two goals Tuesday.
