End of an era

Jimmy Clausen's appearance Saturday in the seventh annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl The U.S. Army All-American Bowl showcases the best high school football players in the country who show great physical strength on the field and mental strength in the classroom. The game features some possible college and NFL stars in a classic East vs. West match-up.  at the Alamodome in San Antonio San Antonio (săn ăntō`nēō, əntōn`), city (1990 pop. 935,933), seat of Bexar co., S central Tex., at the source of the San Antonio River; inc. 1837.  was significant for many reasons, the most notable being his final competition as a prep athlete.

When the 19-year-old quarterback, who has already accumulated enough units to graduate from Oaks Christian of Westlake Village, leaves Jan. 20 to enroll in the spring semester at Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame , he will no longer be eligible to compete in any additional high school all-star games, such as the East-West contest or the Shrine game later this year.

``It's pretty much coming to an end,'' Clausen said. ``It's hard to say goodbye to everyone, but it's a good time in my life. I'm excited about the next four years.''

Clausen, one of 10 members of Oaks Christian's Div. III state championship team to commit to a Division I program, completed 6 of 11 passes for 58 yards to help the West win 24-7.

Family matters

The Buckley family finally got a reprieve reprieve (rĭprēv`): in law, see pardon.  Monday from having to split up and decide who will go to what games. That didn't mean things were less stressful for the family that has brothers playing soccer at different schools.

Brothers Danny and Casey Buckley faced each other as opponents for the first time Monday when St. Francis of La Canada Flintridge played at Mission League rival Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . Danny, a senior defender for St. Francis, spent most of the game guarding Casey, a sophomore forward in his first varsity season with the Cubs.

``We've been looking forward to it,'' Danny said. ``We probably talked more out on the field than we did before at home. We're friends, we try to be good brothers, so we try to keep it friendly.''

Casey was held scoreless, but Loyola won 1-0 to move a half game ahead of Danny and St. Francis in the league race.

The teams meet again Jan. 29 at St.Francis.

Cougars receive All-America honors

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  offensive lineman Alex Dekok and receiver Terence Scott were recently selected junior college All-Americans by the JC Athletic Bureau and California College Football Coaches Association.

COC See chip on chip.  defensive lineman Steve Centaus joined Dekok and Scott on the all-state team (Region III). Scott was also named the All-State Offensive Player of the Year for the region.

San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  State has expressed interest in Scott.

Small school, big-time talent

La Canada senior running back Lavelle Peterson was one of 30 players to receive first-team all-state honors by Cal-Hi Sports, making the list as an all-purpose selection. Peterson, a Daily News All-Area second-team selection, rushed for 2,444 yards and 30 touchdowns for the Spartans.
