Florida Prep star not all talk ... unfortunately

Oaks Christian High of Westlake Village has yet to play a football game this week, but its position in USA Today's national rankings might have already improved.

Lakeland High (Fla.), ranked fourth, could be without star running back Chris Rainey this Friday in the state championship because of an investigation into whether he accepted small gifts and cash. Lakeland also could forfeit its victories.

It all started when Rainey boasted to the Miami Herald that he received sports jerseys and jewelry from a local clothing vendor in exchange for an autograph. He also said he received cash from an unknown elderly woman.

``I didn't even count it,'' Rainey said in a story published Tuesday.

``When I walk around, people are buying me food, giving me money. I'm like, `Damn, I'm glad I'm Chris Rainey.' It's real nice to be me.''

Birmingham yet to practice: Good fourtune for the Mission College men's soccer team has meant bad news for the defending City Section champion Birmingham of Lake Balboa boys' soccer team.

E.B. Madha is the head coach of both teams, leaving Birmingham without a coach or a field to play on while Mission, which also practices at Birmingham, enjoys its best season in program history.

The young Patriots benefit from watching a talented team that still is alive in the state's junior college playoffs, but they have yet to hold their first practice even though most other area high school teams began playing games last week.

``They run during their PE class, but that's about all they've been able to do so far,'' said Madha, noting that last season's team started practicing late, too, but was in form when it mattered.
