Plenty of depth at Agoura

Agoura, favored to contend for its first Marmonte League boys' water polo title since 2002, begins its season without one of its top players. Senior third-year starter Justin Kovanis suffered a broken finger and is expected to be sidelined through at least the first half of league.

New stars align at Taft

The Taft High of Woodland Hills boys' basketball team, which advanced to the City Section championship game a season ago, received some good news and bad news Wednesday when it learned junior guard Oscar Bellfield officially transferred to defending-champion Westchester.

The Toreadors, however, welcomed the additions of several transfers over the summer, including Monte Evans from Oaks Christian of Westlake Village, Marcus Addey (Inglewood), Richard Sims (Serra of Gardena) and Dominick Brumfield (Blue Ridge Prep of Virginia).

``We truly do not expect to miss a beat,'' Taft coach Derrick Taylor said. ``We didn't rebuild, we reloaded. It just worked out that way. It's incredible. It's a freak show around here.''

Poll position

The first edition of the new Southern Section divisional football rankings feature Oaks Christian of Westlake Village holding down the top spot in the Northwest Division and Canyon of Canyon Country receiving the No. 1 ranking in the Northern Division.

St. Francis of La Canada Flintridge is ranked second in the Western Division, Rosamond is third in the East Valley Division, Campbell Hall of North Hollywood is fourth in the Northeast Division and Hart, Moorpark and Valencia occupy Nos. 3-5 in the Northern Division.

Village Christian of Sun Valley (Mid-Valley), Oak Park (Northwest), Loyola of Los Angeles (Pac-5) and Chaminade of West Hills (Western) are all ranked fifth.
