* DANCESPORT READIES FOR PRIME TIME

It will still take more than just fancy footwork to get to the Olympics. However, ballroom dance, now called dancesport, will be seen as an exhibition in the year 2000 and as a planned medal event at the 2008 Games. More than 200 colleges and universities have offered dancesport on a competitive and social basis for several years. And the 1,200 elementary and middle school youngsters in New York City classrooms, who began ballroom dance as a study for its physical, social, and psychological benefits, now have a new goal--Olympic gold. [See Teacher Talk, October 1998.]

Manufacturers, aware of the number of recent social dance--related movies, such as Shall We Dance? and Dance with Me, as well as the revenue possibilities of anything Olympics-related, are designing new collections of ballroom dance--related items. Capezio[R]/Ballet Makers has created a new group of stylish shoes and sweeping rehearsal skirts with dancesport in mind. With nine years to go, there is plenty of time for everyone to rehearse waltzing away with the gold.
