By late Tuesday afternoon, temperatures had soared to 102 in Van Nuys, 99 in Burbank and a scorching 109 in Woodland Hills. ``The normal temperature in August in Woodland Hills is 94.7 degrees,'' said Bill Hoffer, a Weather Service specialist. ``It's hotter than hell.'' The triple-digit temperatures did prompt the weather-watchers to issue the first heat advisory of the summer. ``When we think conditions are going to be hotter than normal we want to make the public aware so they take precautions,'' said Dedric Walker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Oddly, though, the oven-like weather and special heat advisory didn't slow things down at Miami Tan in Canoga Park on Tuesday. Die-hard tanners slathered themselves with lotion and slid underneath the ultraviolet lights - despite the abundant, free sunshine available outside. ``There's air conditioning in here,'' said Kelly Hellmann, who spent 15 minutes in a high-intensity tanning bed. ``I don't want to pass out in the heat. You'd have to spend hours in the sun to get what I can get in here in 15 minutes.'' Luckily, Los Angeles city firefighters were ready for the scorching temperatures. ``Our firefighters have been preparing for this weather for months,'' said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Fire Department. ``They're mandated to work out one hour each day and have been acclimating themselves by working out outdoors.'' By late Tuesday afternoon, Humphrey said it seemed like the city hardly even noticed the scorching heat. ``People in L.A., especially in the inland valleys, are heat-smart,'' he said. ``Not one of the calls we had in the last 24 hours has been directly heat-related.''
