Once again, the number of available beds, as well as the number of licensed beds, dropped in our latest survey. The 25 largest hospitals reported 12,369 available beds out of 15,434 licensed beds, that's down from 12,760 available beds and 15,487 licensed beds a year ago. And there is good reason for the shrinkage Shrinkage The amount by which inventory on hand is shorter than the amount of inventory recorded. Notes: The missing inventory could be due to theft, damage, or book keeping errors. . Hospitals not only in the county but across the country are reducing inpatient inpatient /in·pa·tient/ (in´pa-shent) a patient who comes to a hospital or other health care facility for diagnosis or treatment that requires an overnight stay. in·pa·tient n. beds as part of their drive to shift toward less-expensive preventative and outpatient outpatient /out·pa·tient/ (-pa-shent) a patient who comes to the hospital, clinic, or dispensary for diagnosis and/or treatment but does not occupy a bed. out·pa·tient n. care. The prime example of this locally is the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, which was the 11-largest hospital in Los Angeles County last year but dropped off the list this year when its licensed-bed total shrank shrank v. A notable exception to the hospital downsizing (1) Converting mainframe and mini-based systems to client/server LANs. (2) To reduce equipment and associated costs by switching to a less-expensive system. (jargon) downsizing trend is Citrus Valley Medical Center, which increased its licensed beds from 508 to 564. COUNTY-USC MEDICAL CENTER ONCE again, mammoth mammoth, name for several large prehistoric elephants of the extinct genus Mammuthus, which ranged over Eurasia and North America in the Pleistocene epoch. L.A. County-USC Medical Center tops our list as the largest hospital in the county, on the basis of its 1,417 licensed beds. But in many ways the hospital is just a shell of its former self. Badly damaged in the Northridge earthquake The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM Pacific Standard Time in the city of Los Angeles, California. The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6. , the facility is currently operating with only about half of its licensed beds actually available to patients. Still, with a workforce of 8,000 and an annual budget that tops $700 million, the facility is the centerpiece of the county's medical system. It also remains the largest teaching hospital in the country, serving USC's medical students. Meanwhile, work is starting next door on a new hospital that will replace the current 68-year-old facility.
