EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

HOSPITALS throughout the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area just keep getting smaller and smaller. Once again, the number of available beds, as well as the number of licensed beds, dropped in our latest survey. The 25 largest hospitals reported 12,369 available beds out of 15,434 licensed beds, that's down from 12,760 available beds and 15,487 licensed beds a year ago. And there is good reason for the shrinkage Shrinkage

Hospitals not only in the county but across the country are reducing inpatient inpatient /in·pa·tient/ (in´pa-shent) a patient who comes to a hospital or other health care facility for diagnosis or treatment that requires an overnight stay.

L.A. COUNTY-USC MEDICAL CENTER

ONCE again, mammoth mammoth, name for several large prehistoric elephants of the extinct genus Mammuthus, which ranged over Eurasia and North America in the Pleistocene epoch.  L.A. County-USC Medical Center tops our list as the largest hospital in the county, on the basis of its 1,417 licensed beds. But in many ways the hospital is just a shell of its former self.

The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6. , the facility is currently operating with only about half of its licensed beds actually available to patients.  helped either, combined with a major shift toward less-expensive outpatient treatment. Still, with a workforce of 8,000 and an annual budget that tops $700 million, the facility is the centerpiece of the county's medical system. It also remains the largest teaching hospital in the country, serving USC's medical students.

Meanwhile, work is starting next door on a new hospital that will replace the current 68-year-old facility.
