HOSPITALS.Ranked by number of licensed beds EXECUTIVE SUMMARY WHILE this year's list of the largest hospitals in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. County contains the same 25 facilities as last year, some of the rankings have shifted. The aggregate number of licensed beds at the 25 hospitals has fallen from last year's 16,281 to 15,487. In addition, the number of beds actually available has fallen from 13,460 to 12,760. Some reasons for the continued drop in available beds include cost-cuffing forced by managed care organizations, technological advances, and financial difficulties at some of the local hospitals. There are two very real issues facing hospitals this year: a growing number of uninsured patients and a very serious nursing shortage. Emergency rooms across the city are becoming more and more crowded with patients who are unable to pay for service, and although five of the hospitals on the list have reported an increase in nursing staffs, most of the others have reported a rather significant drop in numbers in numbered parts; as, a book published in numbers. See also: Number of nurses. That, coupled with the low number of current enrollees in nursing schools, paints a rather ominous picture for the future. THE PACESETTER L.A.
