HOSPITAL SEEKS BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION.

Paramedics have been handling more 911 calls from residents who can't or won't make the trip to Ventura, Sanders said.

County officials have had to dispatch more helicopters to the Santa Clara Valley for emergency medical service since the hospital was shuttered, Long said.

Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura has seen a slight increase in emergency room traffic since Santa Paula Memorial shut its doors, said Rhonda Spiegel, the hospital's assistant executive director.

The added patients come at a time when flu outbreaks are increasing the number of patients seen in the emergency room from about 100 per day to 140, she said.

``One day we saw as many as 13 patients from the Santa Paula/Fillmore area,'' she said. ``But for the most part it's been only a handful.''
