Hospital officials are considering using their eminent-domain powers to acquire land set aside by the city for a competing private hospital.

Pennsylvania-based Universal Health Services Universal Health Services, Inc. NYSE: UHS is a Fortune 500 company based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. This company is one of the nation's largest health care management companies, operating acute care hospitals, behavioral health facilities and ambulatory centers , the owner of Lancaster Community Hospital This article or section needs sources or references that appear in reliable, third-party publications. ``Right now, the hospital is looking at every option that's available. There's not been a decision made on the location for the Antelope Valley Health District's Palmdale hospital or how that site is going to be acquired,'' said Jackie Weder, hospital spokeswoman.

``It's not uncommon for other public agencies to utilize eminent domain eminent domain, the right of a government to force the owner of private property sell it if it is needed for a public use. The right is based on the doctrine that a sovereign state has dominion over all lands and buildings within its borders, which has its origins in . Whether it's an appropriate mechanism in this case has yet to be determined. Any final decision on this particular issue would only be made following a thorough and comprehensive discussion with community stakeholders Stakeholders

,'' Weder said.

The idea was denounced by Mayor Jim Ledford, who was among the city officials who voted for Universal Health's hospital plan nearly four years ago. Officials say they are waiting for state architects to review and approve hospital blueprints.

``If that is an option, I think it's a stupid option because we have been trying to work with that hospital district for a number of years to do something,'' Mayor Jim Ledford said. ``If that option is to try to take this property, we will most vigorously oppose that.''

City officials called a news conference Wednesday afternoon over the hospital site, then quickly canceled it, saying they needed to do further investigation.

Antelope Valley Hospital officials in April announced they were considering asking voters in November to approve taxing property owners to pay for a new Palmdale hospital and renovating the Lancaster facility.

Antelope Valley Hospital officials have not said where their Palmdale hospital might be built. The hospital's clinic at 40th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard has been considered a possible hospital site.
