PALMDALE -- With the hiring of a general contractor A general contractor is an organization or individual that contracts with another organization or individual (the owner) for the construction of a building, road or any other execution of work or facility. , construction of Palmdale's hospital is expected to go into full swing this summer.

Layton Construction of Utah was hired by Universal Health Services Universal Health Services, Inc. NYSE: UHS is a Fortune 500 company based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. This company is one of the nation's largest health care management companies, operating acute care hospitals, behavioral health facilities and ambulatory centers  to build the Palmdale Regional Medical Center Palmdale Regional Medical Center also known as Palmdale Hospital (PMC) is a private hospital that is under construction and located in Palmdale, California. This acute care facility will be the only hospital in Palmdale, the largest American city currently without a  and is in the process of lining up its equipment and subcontractors.

Trautman said he could not provide cost figures for the Layton contractor because of the effort to line up subcontractors. The last disclosed estimate for building the Palmdale Regional Medical Center was $100 million.

The hospital is projected to be completed in late 2007.

Other work is already under way on the hospital site, south of Palmdale Boulevard at 10th Street West. Under two separate contracts, utilities are being put underground and retaining walls are going up, said Michael Adams

Along with two medical office buildings being constructed as part of the overall project, the hospital construction will employ 1,300 workers and pump about $200 million into the region's economy, according to UHS UHS University Health Services

When the complex is complete, it will provide between 800 and 1,000 jobs and have an economic impact of $359 million.

Built for 239 beds, the new hospital is expected to open with 171 beds, because that is as many as officials expect they initially can find the staff for. The new hospital will have 35 emergency room beds.

The hospital will end the city's distinction as California's largest community without a hospital, a status it has held since Desert Palms Hospital closed in 1996.
