Byline: Kermit Pattison Daily News Staff Writer

Ventura County voters rejected plans to build a new $51 million public hospital wing and a landfill at Weldon Canyon Weldon Canyon is a canyon in Los Angeles County, California, United States, through which Interstate 5 passes. The Old Road, now paralleled by I-5, opened on May 28, 1930 through the canyon as a bypass of the 1910 Newhall Tunnel.  while returning two incumbents to the Board of Supervisors and sending a third seat to a November runoff.

Nearly 63 percent of county voters in Tuesday's election opposed the county's plans to build a new clinic building and parking garage at the Ventura County Medical Center Ventura County Medical Center is a hospital in the city of Ventura, California, USA. , not government expansion,'' said Michael Bakst, executive director of Community Memorial Hospital. ``I think voters saw that principal and did not see health care for the poor at stake.''

Madge Schaefer, a spokeswoman for Saving Money as Responsible Taxpayers, the group supporting the county hospital project, blamed the defeat on being heavily outspent out·spent

``It's very difficult to overcome $20 spent for every $1 you spend,'' said Schaefer, a former county supervisor. ``It's such a staggering amount. . . . We think we did very well against overwhelming odds.''

Voters also rejected a developer's attempt to revive the moribund Weldon Canyon Landfill proposal. More than 71 percent of voters opposed ballot Measure T, sponsored by Taconic Resources of Del Mar Del Mar is the name of several places in the United States of America:

``This will become a great victory for David, who succeeded in kicking Goliath's ass to the other side of the county line,'' said Andrew Stasse, a Weldon opponent.

``Assuming the numbers hold, Weldon is dead.''

In the wake of the defeat, Taconic Resources General Partner Richard Chase Richard Trenton Chase (May 23, 1950 – December 26, 1980) was an American serial killer who killed six people in the span of a month in California. He earned the nickname The Vampire of Sacramento due to his drinking of his victims' blood and his cannibalism.  said he and his investors would abandon their bid to place the dump at Weldon Canyon once and for all.

``As far as we're concerned, it's over,'' Chase said. ``The voters obviously have spoken and we respect their decision.''
