70-year-old Elks Lodge member looked as if he should have been out riding the horses, not tossing their shoes.

But there he was Saturday in the bar of the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. ``I used to play a lot of horseshoes,'' he said, relaxing on his bar stool bar stool nBarhocker m . ``Now I play just on Get Acquainted Day, because my thumb is giving out. But it's a lot of fun.''

Only about 12 contestants had signed up during the first two or so hours of the daylong event, according to according to

, who has run the tournament all seven years for the Lodge.

The tourney typically attracts about 30 players who are divided into 15 teams, and he planned to start the tournament when the roster of players reached 20, he said. While waiting for other sign-ups, several of the contestants had spent some time practicing in the hot sun, the clanking clank

of the horseshoes echoing over the country music blaring over the loudspeakers.

The sport appeals to people for several reasons, Tyler said.

``It's an outdoor sport, it's fairly relaxing, and you can talk to different people,'' he said. ``It's enjoyable to get to know your competitor - at the same time you're friends.''

The horseshoe contest was just one of many attractions at the annual Get Acquainted Day, intended as both a venue for the public to get to know the Lodge and its members, and as a fund-raising event for local charities and other deserving causes.

``We're able to open our doors to the public,'' said Bob Holm, chairman of this year's event. ``We want to let people know what we stand for, what we support. And it's an opportunity for our members to get acquainted - they don't all know each other.''

The event also included music, pony rides for children and a rich variety of food, including Cajun-style turkey, corn on the cob and homemade baked beans baked beans

Beneficiaries of the fund-raising event include Aid to Disabled Children, Conejo Valley Senior Concerns, youth programs and various scholarship programs, Holm said.

The event typically raises from $2,000 to more than $5,000, he said, adding he expected this year's Get Acquainted Day to raise $3,000 to $4,000.

The horseshoe contest has always been an integral part of the event, Holm said. ``It's something people like to do,'' he said. ``It's a good, old-fashioned American pastime.''
