The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into  in an attempt to prevent crime during the busiest shopping time of the year.

Despite the extra patrols in the busiest shopping areas, law-enforcement officials say using your own common sense is still the best way to avoid becoming a victim.

It is best to take packages straight home from a store, Deputy Dave Miklos of the Palmdale sheriff's station said. If some must be left in the car while shoppers are in other stores, they should be locked up in the trunk A communications channel between two points. Telephone "trunks" handle thousands of simultaneous voice and data signals, whereas telephone "lines" are the wires from the  or elsewhere out of sight, he said. ``Also, don't get so caught up with everything going on that you're not aware of your surroundings,'' he advised.

Deputies on these patrols are focusing on preventing auto burglaries and robberies, but they are also available to handle traffic problems and urgent calls from nearby areas.

The Volunteer Mounted Patrol is patrolling shopping centers on horseback, which gives members high visibility and a good vantage point.

``Because most criminals are opportunists, they search for the easiest targets,'' Miklos said. ``If there is higher visibility, hopefully it will keep those types of crimes down.''

The patrols have already resulted in the arrests of two people on suspicion of attempted burglary burglary, at common law, the breaking and entering of a dwelling house of another at night with the intent to commit a felony, whether the intent is carried out or not.  and receiving stolen property after pry marks were spotted on four cars parked near the 24-Hour Fitness Center.

The extra patrols will be watching out on shopping through Christmas and then target drinking drivers during the New Year's holiday.
