HORSE RACING NOTEBOOK: RECENT DEATHS ROCK DEL MAR.

A deadly opening to the Del Mar Del Mar is the name of several places in the United States of America:
  • Del Mar, California
  • Del Mar, Texas
  • Del Mar High School, located in San Jose, California
  • Del Mar Racetrack, located in Del Mar, California
 season has leaders of the San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  County track desperate for an explanation.

Horses named Esroh and Bonus Pack had to be euthanized after suffering leg injuries in separate races Wednesday, bringing the total of fatal breakdowns to six in competition and one in training in the first seven days of the meet.

During its entire 43-day meet in 2005, Del Mar had seven horses die in competition and 11 others die in workouts.

This year's disturbing trend prompted Del Mar executives to convene a meeting of track and horsemen's representatives last weekend, but no single answer was found.

Del Mar did announce it was adding sand to the composition of its main track.

There is speculation that the racing surface has been affected by increased morning workout traffic caused by the temporary unavailability of Hollywood Park Hollywood Park may be several places:
  • Hollywood Park, Texas
  • Hollywood Park, Chicago, a neighborhood in Chicago
  • Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California
  • Hollywood Park Racetrack, Thoroughbred race track in Inglewood, California
 and Santa Anita for training.

``We can't put our finger on any one thing,'' Joe Harper, Del Mar's president, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and general manager, told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Harper said an X-ray and sonar examination of the base of the main track found no unevenness that could explain horses taking bad steps.

``The veterinarians Veterinarians and veterinary surgeons (vets) are medical professionals who operate exclusively on animals. Well-known and notable veterinarians include:

 have been diligent,'' Harper said, in looking out for injury-prone horses. ``I have told the vets and told the riders, any little doubt in your mind, scratch (the horse). I'd rather scratch 100 good horses than miss just one (whose serious injury could have been prevented.''

Streaking sprinters: Bordonaro seeks his fifth consecutive victory -- at a fifth different racetrack -- Sunday in the $300,000 Bing Crosby Handicap, the main event of Del Mar's second weekend.

Bill Spawr-trained Bordonara (Alex Solis) has won at Santa Anita (at the Oak Tree meet) and Hollywood, Gulfstream and Oaklawn parks.

His opponents are expected to include Art Sherman-trained Carthage (Dennis Carr), who counts 2005 sprint champion Lost in the Fog Lost in the Fog (February 4, 2002 - September 17, 2006) was an American thoroughbred race horse. Bred by Susan Seper and born in Florida, the Fog's sire was Lost Soldier (sire so far of 10 stakes winners), a son of Danzig (himself the son of Northern Dancer ranked at #43 by The  among his victims in a five-race win streak.

Back to the Spa: Bernardini races in Saturday's $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes The Jim Dandy Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race. The Grade II race has been held annually since 1964 at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. The race is open to horses age three, willing to race one and one-eighth miles on the dirt.  at Saratoga, the 3-year-old's first start since winning the Preakness Stakes that everyone remembers for Barbaro's injury.

``There's no doubt he was overlooked a bit,'' said Tom Albertrani, Bernardini's trainer. ``It was unfortunate what happened to Barbaro, but our horse ran an incredible race that day.''

Bernardini (Javier Castellano) seeks his fourth consecutive victory as the 4-5 favorite on the morning line against Hemingway's Key, Oh So Awesome, Sunriver, Dr. Pleasure and Minister's Bid.

Barbaro remains in intensive care in Pennsylvania.

The Jim Dandy is the first marquee race of the 138th Saratoga season, which opened its 36-day run Wednesday in upstate New York Upstate New York is the region of New York State north of the core of the New York metropolitan area. It has a population of 7,121,911 out of New York State's total 18,976,457. Were it an independent state, it would be ranked 13th by population. . The Woodward Stakes moves from Belmont Park -- and earlier in the calendar -- to be held Sept.2.

Jock talk: With Patrick Valenzuela sidelined, Martin Garcia is looking like the top challenger to Victor Espinoza, who is trying to defend his 2005 Del Mar title.

Garcia, the 21-year-old apprentice, briefly led the jockey standings Wednesday before Espinoza rode the day's last three winners to take a 12-10 lead.

Garcia begins a three-day suspension Sunday for a riding infraction Violation or infringement; breach of a statute, contract, or obligation.

The term infraction is frequently used in reference to the violation of a particular statute for which the penalty is minor, such as a parking infraction.

Valenzuela could miss the entire Del Mar meet because of a back injury.
