HORSE RACING DRAMATIC GOLD WINS BY A NECK AT DEL MAR.

Byline: Associated Press

Dramatic Gold led all the way Sunday in winning the $205,650 Del Mar Breeders' Cup Handicap by a neck over Alphabet Soup to move closer to the $2 million mark in career earnings.

Ridden by Kent Desormeaux and carrying 118 pounds, Dramatic Gold covered one mile in 1:34 3/5 and, as the 23-10 second-favorite, paid $6.60 and $2.40.

Dramatic Gold finished fourth in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar a month ago.

The win was the sixth in 26 lifetime starts for Dramatic Gold and was worth $125,650, raising the career earnings of the 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Slew o' Gold to $1,924,850.

Alphabet Soup, the 3-5 favorite who won the race last year in 1:34 1/5, crossed the finish line 2-1/2 lengths in front of Savinio and returned $2.20. Alphabet Soup was ridden by Chris Antley and carried high weight of 120 pounds.

My Flag wins Gazelle gazelle, name for the many species of delicate, graceful antelopes of the genus Gazella, inhabiting arid, open country. Most gazelles are found only in Africa, but several species range over N Africa and SW Asia; the Persian, or goitered, gazelle (Gazella subgutterosa) is found only in S and central Asia. Gazelles are rather small antelopes, most standing from 2 to 3 ft (60–90 cm) high at the shoulder, and are generally fawn colored. 'Cap: The Phipps family continued its near monopoly of the Gazelle Handicap when Ogden Phipps' My Flag won the 101st running of the $200,000, Grade I race for 3-year-old fillies at Belmont Park in New York.

It was the fourth time in the last six runnings of the Gazelle that a Phipps-owned filly prevailed.
