And later, in a mark of his influence on Del Mar's 60th-anniversary season, Baffert got credit for Kent Desormeaux's narrow victory over Alex Solis in the battle for the jockey championship. Desormeaux rode his 39th (Foreign Vengeance) and 40th (Best Star) winners of the meet early in the afternoon to take the lead by one over Solis, who finished second with three of his six remaining mounts but couldn't get the equalizer. Desormeaux's title was his first since the 1994-95 Santa Anita meet and followed his ninth-place tie at Hollywood Park. He rode 15 of his winners for Baffert, who had 27 to lead the Del Mar trainers for the first time. Desormeaux, who made a point of exercising horses for Baffert during the Hollywood Park meet, got a break when Baffert favorite David Flores Flores, town, Guatemala Flores (flōrəs), town (1990 est. pop. 2,200), capital of Petén department, N Guatemala. Desormeaux's triumph broke a long streak by Solis, who was trying to tie Bill Shoemaker's 1950-52 record by capturing a seventh straight riding title in Southern California. ``We were trying hard,'' Solis said after finishing last aboard Princess Efisio in the meet's final race, his last chance to tie. ``It wasn't meant to be.'' Solis' best chance of the day came when he rode 2-year-old Old Topper for 86-year-old trainer Noble Threewitt in the Futurity. The 7-5 favorite rallied from last to miss by a nose in 1:23 for 7 furlongs. Old Topper had no excuses. Souvenir Copy, the winner, had plenty. He had a rough start, was stopped by traffic on the turn and at the top of the stretch, then knifed between Double Honor and King of the Wild to win and pay $26.20. Souvenir Copy became the fourth Del Mar Futurity winner for McCarron and the fourth for the Mabees' Golden Eagle Farm, who bred the son of Mr. Prospector and Dancing Tribute in Kentucky. The colt will face comparisons to Silver Charm, Baffert's '96 Futurity winner, who went on to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.
