ARCADIA -- Bobby Frankel, winning at his customary rate of 23 percent this year, had just won the $250,000 Grade I Malibu Stakes The Malibu Stakes is a race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses of either gender held each December at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The race is at a distance of seven furlongs on the dirt and is the first leg of Santa Anita Park's Strub Series.  with Latent Heat latent heat, heat change associated with a change of state or phase (see states of matter). Latent heat, also called heat of transformation, is the heat given up or absorbed by a unit mass of a substance as it changes from a solid to a liquid, from a liquid to a gas,  on Tuesday during opening day of Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:

when someone asked the Hall of Fame trainer about closing in on the legendary Charlie Whittingham for most victories at the track.

The victory was Frankel's 852nd lifetime at Santa Anita, lifting the 65-year-old Brooklyn native within 17 wins of Whittingham, who curiously won the Malibu only twice during his stellar career.

``If I live long enough, I might catch him,'' Frankel said.

Frankel will catch him before April if he has a normal winter-spring meet.

He was third in the trainer's standings last year with 32 victories and fourth the year before with 22.

Latent Heat made the 2006 edition of the Malibu, the first leg of the Strub Series that is restricted to 4-year-olds, his own private playground in front of an on-track crowd of 32,931. The Maria's Mon colt put his head in front at the top of the stretch and drew clear to win by two lengths over 17-1 long shot Spring At Last in 1:21.39 for the 7-furlong distance on dirt.

It was another head back to third-place finisher Midnight Lute The Grade 1 winner, Midnight Lute, is owned by Michael E. Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Watson. Latent Heat came in off an uncharacteristically bad ninth-place drubbing at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., on Oct.13. He had not been worse than third in seven previous races, winning four of them. He had broken his maiden in his second career start at Santa Anita in January.

``He wasn't eating before the race,'' Frankel said of the debacle at Keeneland. ``I wasn't there, but they were all saying, `He'll be OK, he'll be OK.' After the race, he had a 13,000white blood cell count white blood cell count,

, so he obviously had an infection in his system. High normal is 10,000.''

Latent Heat was well enough Tuesday to score his fifth win in nine lifetime starts and increase his bankroll bank·roll

to $327,400. Ridden by Edgar Prado, who cut short a family vacation in LasVegas to make a score at Santa Anita, the winner returned $13.40 as the fourth choice.

Frankel sounded like he'll skip the second leg of the Strub, the 11/16 San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes The San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes is an American race for thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park each year. It's a Grade II event open to horses, age four and up, willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt.  on Jan. 13, with Latent Heat and concentrate on shorter races.

``I'm not sure he wants to go around two turns,'' Frankel said.

Big day: Gomez, who found the winner's circle four times Tuesday, guided Pirates Deputy to a one-length victory in the $125,000 California Breeders' Champion Stakes California Breeders' Champion Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1935 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.

 for 2-year-old state breds.

Sent postward as the 2-1 favorite, Pirates Deputy covered the seven furlongs over the main track in 1:23.66 and returned $6. Tap It Light, a 39-1 outsider, was second and Complexity finished third.

Track firsts: Kip Deville gave jockey Richard Migliore his first Santa Anita win and trainer Richard Dutrow his first stakes win at the Arcadia oval when the gray colt won the $100,000 Sir Beaufort Stakes for 3- year-olds by one length over 23-1 long shot Awesome Gem.

The winner, who returned $16.20, covered the 1-mile turf distance in 1:36.12.
