INGLEWOOD-- Race-horse owner Roy Jackson said last week that having a 3-year-old as good as Showing Up so soon after Barbaro is like having Lou Gehrig following Babe Ruth in the batting order.

Hollywood Park fans saw what Jackson meant on Sunday when this Iron Horse lived up to his 4-5 odds and won the $500,000 Hollywood Derby by 2 1/4 lengths with jockey Cornelio Velasquez.

Later in the day, Price Tag and Edgar Prado won the $500,000 Matriarch in the lastrace of Hollywood Park's three-day Turf Festival.

Also on a busy day, jockey Patrick Valenzuela broke three ribs when Gotta Getcha kicked him in the paddock before Hollywood Park's fifthrace, and Russell Baze rode two winners at Bay Meadows to move within two of Laffit Pincay's record 9,530.

Jackson's baseball allusion came naturally. He's a former minor-league team owner and Pacific Coast League president. And his college roommate at Penn was Peter O'Malley, the former Dodgers owner, who made a rare racetrack appearance Sunday with Roy and Gretchen Jackson.

O'Malley spoke admiringly of his friends' efforts to give Barbaro the best treatment for the severe injury the Kentucky Derby winner sustained in the Preakness.

``I don't think anybody can relate to the tragedy (of Barbaro's breakdown),'' O'Malley said in the winner's circle. ``But they've handled it so well. They love Barbaro and they love the sport. It's sincere.''

With Velasquez in the blue, green and white silks Barbaro made famous in May, Barclay Tagg-trained Showing Up ($3.60) rallied from fifth and held off Obrigado and Ivan Denisovich. It was the seventhvictory in nine career starts for $1.6 million earner Showing Up, who won the Secretariat at Arlington and the Jamaica at Belmont.

The Hollywood Derby, a 1 1/4-mile turf race, lost a star when Santa Anita Derby winner Brother Derek was scratched following a Sunday-morning bout of colic.
