Giacomo won for the first time since last year's Kentucky Derby Kentucky Derby

One of the classic U.S. Thoroughbred horse races. It was established in 1875 and run annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs track in Louisville, Ky. With the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, it makes up U.S. racing's coveted Triple Crown.

The $180,000 winning purse boosted Giacomo's career earnings to $2.2 million.

``I was hoping he could still throw his race -- and he did,'' Smith said. ``I flashed back on the (Kentucky) Derby when he made that (stretch) move.''

Trainer John Shirreffs said Giacomo's next race could be the $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 20 at Del Mar.
