Pleasantly Perfect Pleasantly Perfect (born April 2, 1998 in Lexington, Kentucky) is a Thoroughbred racehorse who retired as the fourth richest American horse in career earnings. A son of Pleasant Colony, winner of the 1981 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, he was out of the mare Regal State who  again Sunday at Del Mar Del Mar is the name of several places in the United States of America:
  • Del Mar, California
  • Del Mar, Texas
  • Del Mar High School, located in San Jose, California
  • Del Mar Racetrack, located in Del Mar, California
in the $1 million Pacific Classic, trainer Jeff Mullins will deserve to brag more than he did after the gelding gelding

upset the top-ranked older horse earlier this month.

Mullins was humble after Choctaw Nation and jockey Victor Espinoza scored a come-from-behind, 3/4-length victory at 6-1 odds in the Aug. 1 San Diego Handicap The San Diego Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. The race is open to horses, age three and up, willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt. The race carries a purse of 300,000.  by taking advantage of Pleasantly Perfect's recent inactivity and a 10-pound edge in the weights.

``We got lucky. The only thing we were banking on was that Pleasantly Perfect was going to have the Dubai bounce,'' Mullins said in the winner's circle, referring to the chance the favorite would be less than sharp after a four-month layoff following his Dubai World Cup The Dubai World Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1996 at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The race is operated through the Emirates Horse Racing Authority (EHRA) whose Chairman is Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan,  triumph.

On Sunday, when Choctaw Nation and Pleasantly Perfect will be among eight horses in the Pacific Classic, the two will compete on even terms. Pleasantly Perfect should be 100 percent fit for a race he must win to help his Horse of the Year campaign. Every horse will carry 124 pounds under the event's weight-for-age conditions.

So, Choctaw Nation will have to continue to improve as he has while quickly climbing the class ladder since Mullins and owner Bob Bone claimed the 4-year-old son of Louis Quatorze for $40,000 out of his debut Feb. 29 at Santa Anita.

Trained for that first sprint by Bruce Headley, Choctaw Nation turned heads by making up 17 lengths in the final five-sixteenths of a mile to rally from eighth place to a 2 1/4-length victory under Alex Solis. In subsequent victories at longer distances, he made up 10 lengths, 11 lengths and 7 lengths. In the San Diego Handicap, his stakes-level debut, he came from 9 1/4 lengths back in sixth before sweeping four-wide, while Pleasantly Perfect might have felt the effects of running closer than usual to the early pace.

Choctaw Nation's earnings of $241,800 have paid for the $40,000 purchase several times over. But they look small compared to Pleasantly Perfect's $6,749,880, which includes huge winner's purses from the 2003 Breeders' Cup Classic The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade 1 Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3 years old and older run at a distance of 1¼ miles (2012 m) on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup.  and the 2004 Dubai World Cup.

Pleasantly Perfect is the 6-5 favorite on the Pacific Classic morning line. Choctaw Nation is the 9-2 third choice, behind 7-2 Perfect Drift.

The field includes Hollywood Gold Cup The Hollywood Gold Cup is a Grade I stakes race for thoroughbred horses inaugurated in 1938 at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California. It was run as a handicap race until 1997 when it was switched to weight-for-age conditions.  winner Total Impact (6-1), Stephen Foster long-shot winner Colonial Colony (8-1) and San Diego third-place finisher During (12-1).
