HOPES HIGH FOR CANYON'S BOYS, GIRLS SWIMMING TEAMS.

Canyon swimming coach Debi Broker doesn't expect either the boys' or girls' teams to finish at the bottom of the Foothill League, like both did last year. However, she thinks the teams will be stronger in different ways.

Broker is banking for the boys to improve based on the returning swimmers while she looks for the girls to do better because of the newcomers.

Seniors Ross Samya, Adam Sturgeon sturgeon, primitive fish of the northern regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. All have shown steadily-improving times in their events and should make the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

Other returners include freestyler and relayer Justin Dyczewski and sophomore sprinter and 100-yard butterfly man Eric Cunningham Eric Gordon Cunningham (born April 14, 1949) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1975 to 1984, as a member of the Ontario Liberal Party. .

Broker also is hoping increased depth will help the boys' team. Last season the team had just 10 swimmers. This year, it features 18.

``We've been trying to build the program little by little every year,'' Broker said. ``Every year, we try and get more recruits. It might be another rebuilding year, but we're looking forward to it.''

Freshman Eduardo Ruiz, who swims the 100 butterfly, is considered the boys' top newcomer.

The girls' team should be stronger thanks to a good group of recruits coming in. The best by far is sophomore Kalie Boggio, a utility swimmer who Broker expects to qualify for CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF).  in just about any race she wants.

``Kalie swims in club so she competes all year,'' Broker said. ``She is just excellent. She has worked under specialized coaches and that has made a huge difference. When she practices, she blows everyone away.

``She probably wants to be on the Olympics team one day.''

The other top newcomer for the girls is sophomore Katherine Eng, who also competes in several events including the 100 backstroke, the freestyle races and the 100 breaststroke.

``Both Kalie and Katherine just dominate practice,'' Broker said. ``They have great technique, they work hard and they practice year-round.''

Top returners for the girls are senior Deanna Marquez (100 breaststroke), and juniors Katie Twarowski (100 freestyle) and Cristine Hall (500 freestyle, 200 freestyle).

All in all, Broker is confident things will look better in 2002.
