HONORING THEIR SACRIFICE; RESIDENTS GATHER TO RECOGNIZE VETERANS.

As the ``Star-Spangled Banner'' rose up from the crowd assembled for Veterans Day, one old veteran trembled as he held his flag high to honor his comrades, living and dead.

In the audience at Lancaster Cemetery were people of all ages - some too young to understand, and some hoping that the young will never fully have to understand the significance of the day first-hand.

``Americans' freedom depends on our remembrance of veterans who paid the price for that freedom,'' said Lancaster Vice Mayor Henry Hearns, a Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953.  and strangers who shared a common purpose - protecting Americans and their rights.

``We're strong because we pay homage and honor to those who serve - that gives us the strength,'' said Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam.  veteran Robert C. Marr, Junior Past State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who spoke in Lancaster. ``We celebrate their lives because they gave their lives. It's comforting to be able to do that.

``The Declaration of Independence is alive and well here today because millions of Americans cared enough to preserve the ideals for which it stands,'' said Marr.

At the Palmdale Veterans Day ceremony at Desert Lawn Cemetery, Mayor Jim Ledford said observing Veterans Day is a way of giving thanks.

``It's important that we make a minor sacrifice to support the people that make the ultimate sacrifice,'' said Ledford. ``We can never show enough respect and say thanks enough.''

People in the audience at Lancaster agreed on the importance of the day.

``It's a very important day because it honors all our veterans,'' said Beth Deliberto, whose husband, Jay, is the senior vice commander at VFW See Video for Windows.  Post 3000 in Quartz Hill. ``Our family alone represents the Marines, Air Force and Army.''

``These sacrifices of the past have made possible the future,'' Runner said. ``And if we can carry forward the message of Veterans Day to the next generation and the one after that and the one beyond that one, then we can keep America going for another 200 years and two hundred more beyond that.''
