LANCASTER - The Lancaster West Rotary Club honored its Deputy Sheriff, Firefighter, and Teacher of the Year on May 6 at the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

``We are pleased to honor the public servants who educate the children of our community and who keep us safe,'' said Club President Diane Grooms. ``This is an annual tradition for our club and this year, especially, it is a meaningful tribute to these professions.''

The Deputy of the Year is Randolph Mergdle of the Lancaster sheriff's station. Mergdle is a graduate of Quartz Hill Elementary School elementary school: see school. , Joe Walker Middle School and Quartz Hill High School Quartz Hill High School is a public, co-educational high school located in Lancaster, California. Founded in 1964, it is the third oldest comprehensive high school in the Antelope Valley High School District (AVHSD).  and attended Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. . He joined the Sheriff's Department in 1990 and is currently the team leader of the Lancaster Target Oriented Policing Unit.

``Deputy Mergdle distinguished himself by participating in several special operations Operations conducted in hostile, denied, or politically sensitive environments to achieve military, diplomatic, informational, and/or economic objectives employing military capabilities for which there is no broad conventional force requirement.  including the Men in Black and Silent Thunder stings,'' said sheriff's Capt. Tom Piggott.

Firefighter of the Year is Capt. Robert A. Falb, safety officer for the Antelope Valley. For 10 years, Falb has been the training captain, responsible for all training for the firefighters, captains, battalion chiefs and assistant battalion chiefs in the Antelope Valley. He was a member of the Pomona Fire Department for 25 years before joining the Los Angeles County Fire Department Not to be confused with Los Angeles Fire Department.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), serves unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County, as well as 58 cities and towns that choose to have the county provide fire and EMS services, including the City of La
 in 1994.

Teacher of the Year is Linda L. Cayce, a sixth-grade language arts language arts

The subjects, including reading, spelling, and composition, aimed at developing reading and writing skills, usually taught in elementary and secondary school.
 and social studies teacher at Amargosa Creek Middle School with 14 years of teaching experience.

``I patiently and nurturingly teach them the essentials of becoming the best they can be. I help them set high goals and plans for achieving those goals. I accept nothing less than each student striving to reach his or her highest capability,'' said Cayce of her 65 students.

Lancaster West Rotary Club supports local charities and deserving youth in the community with scholarships and grants. Organizations helped by the club include the Antelope Valley Hospital Gift Foundation, Antelope Valley Youth Expo, City of Hope, Domestic Violence Council, Special Olympics, Lancaster Education Foundation, Grace Resource Center, United Way, Children's Center of the Antelope Valley, and the Antelope Valley Boys and Girls boys and girls
