HOMETOWN HEROES : ATHLETES OF THE WEEK.

Boys: Jake Stewart, Westlake.

What he did: The senior guard averaged 24.7 points per game in sparking Westlake to the championship of the Morro Bay tournament.

The scoop: Stewart, one of the area's top shooters, made 10 3-pointers during the three-game tournament and was named Most Valuable Player. Even more impressive is that he took the SAT exam Saturday in Thousand Oaks, then drove 2-1/2 hours to play in the tournament final in Morro Bay the same afternoon.

Comment: ``He was the best player on the court throughout the tournament,'' Westlake coach Gary Grayson said.

Girls:Damaris Hinojosa, Moorpark.

What she did: The 5-foot-11 sophomore center scored 20, 25, 20 and 25 points as the Musketeers went 4-0 and won the Fillmore tournament championship.

The scoop: Hinojosa started for Moorpark as a freshman. She was a top player in youth basketball and continues to improve. She scored at will in the tournament.

Comment: ``She was phenomenal,'' Moorpark coach Brent Milburn said. ``She's a great player. She's quick and strong on the boards.''

OFFBEAT

Chivalry is in at Notre Dame: Two weeks ago, the Notre Dame High marching band played at the USC-Notre Dame game at the Coliseum. When an excited USC fan charged onto the field after the Trojans' upset win, he grabbed a $65 band helmet worn by a female member. That's when Notre Dame band member Andrew Langer went into action. ``I said, `That's one of our helmets. I can't let him get away.' I caught up to him and ripped it off his head,'' Langer said. Langer plays soccer and water polo for the Knights when not playing the baritone for the band. He ran so fast chasing down the USC fan that maybe John Robinson will want to offer him a scholarship.
