SPORT-BY-SPORT UPDATE Pro baseball: Former Monroe pitcher Wayne Nix, last season's City Section 4-A Player of the Year, underwent reconstructive shoulder surgery two weeks ago and will be sidelined for the entire 1996 minor-league season. Nix was a second-round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics last June.... St. Genevieve graduate Steve Smith has been named a bench coach for the Seattle Mariners. Smith played on the Valiants' 1970 Southern Section finalist team.

College baseball: Former Notre Dame pitcher Rich Igou has been sidelined at San Francisco for the past three weeks because of tendinitis in his rotator cuff rotator cuff

College football: Former Monroe receiver Jeff Nadeau has quit the team at Arizona. Also in Tucson, former Newbury Park quarterback Keith Smith is pushing No.1 Brady Batten in spring drills. Ex-Taft standout Dashon Polk is the No.2 inside linebacker and could start while former San Fernando quarterback Leon Blunt is the No.2 tailback.

Cycling: New Pierce College football defensive coordinator John Wordin, an avid cyclist, made the cut for the Tour Du Pont International Invitational, May 1-12, from Wilmington, Del., to Atlanta.
