HOMESTEAD ACRE TURNS BACK CLOCK; CHATSWORTH'S PIONEER PERIOD REMEMBERED.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Homestead Homestead.

The site, which now features a museum and an old-time cottage, was an original pioneer homestead first settled in the 1880s.

On Sunday, history buffs and volunteers turned the clock back in time for the 7th annual ``Pioneer Day,'' a fund-raiser sponsored by the Chatsworth Historical Society to benefit the acre's maintenance.

``This is the day we focus on history,'' said Lila Schepler, who moved to the area in 1956 and is now a docent for the Historical Society. Wearing a long prairie dress, complete with a sun bonnet, Schepler remembered growing up in the area.

``There were orange trees, crops, Canoga figs, farming and few homes,'' she said.

``They enjoy it (washing) here but not at home,'' said Virginia Watson with a laugh. Watson is curator for the Chatsworth Museum.

 Hill, who came to the area in the 1880s. Minnie Hill, the seventh of the Hills' eight children, lived there in pioneer style until she died at 90 in 1976.

The original cottage was built in 1911 from wooden planks with no studs. ``It went through the earthquake a lot better than modern buildings,'' said Betty Summer, who moved to the area in the 1940s.

An estimated 300 to 400 people attend the event annually. Last year, the society raised about $2,000.
