SENIORS Fanfare for good deeds

The Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  Council on Aging is searching for a special senior citizen who as the 1996 Senior of the Year can receive a commendation COMMENDATION. The act of recommending, praising. A merchant who merely commends goods he offers for sale, does not by that act warrant them, unless there is some fraud: simplex commendatio non obligat.  and a plaque from the City of Thousand Oaks.

Throughout the year the winning senior's photograph will hang on the Goebel Senior Center's Wall of Fame.

We're breaking new ground in our attempts to turn a simple, but important, celebration into an event marked by fanfare. The banquet will be a cooperative community effort by the Thousand Oaks Council on Aging, the Elks Lodge and the Goebel Senior Adult Center with help from many others.

Traditionally, our honorees show through good deeds that they are not content to be ordinary. The ideal candidates might be involved in charity work or they could be church volunteers. They could be housewives who have raised children and now must care for elderly parents or grandchildren GRANDCHILDREN, domestic relations. The children of one's children. Sometimes these may claim bequests given in a will to children, though in general they can make no such claim. 6 Co. 16. . Working beyond the call of duty at the library or at a social service agency might earn a senior citizen a recommendation.

Small obstacles arose as the council began planning the banquet. We knew that an event such as we were planning needed much more than the lunch service available at the senior center. We needed permits and permissions to use pots, pans, dinner services and refrigeration refrigeration, process for drawing heat from substances to lower their temperature, often for purposes of preservation. Refrigeration in its modern, portable form also depends on insulating materials that are thin yet effective. . We also needed a caterer. Enter the Elks Lodge with its banquet catering know-how. Other local businesses and groups will help with the event.

We now have all the permits we need and plans are well on the road to a grand event.

The Senior Awards Banquet will be held at the Goebel Senior Adult Center, 1385 E. Janss Road, on June 20 at 6 p.m.

Members of the Council on Aging committee to organize the banquet include:

Robert Baskerville;

Marilyn Davis;

Marshall Dixon;

John Eslick;

Connie Kraszewski;

Jerry Serota;

Martin Shephard;

Joe Smolarski;

Albert Teitler

Last year's recipient, Forest Goetsch, was honored for his work at the public library.

Applications will be accepted at the Goebel Senior Adult Center, (805) 381-2744, or at City Hall, (805) 497-2134.

Recommendations also can be made by calling (805) 497-1197.

Bulletin Board Birds count with local club

If you've been eager to go on a birding vacation, why not do it the weekend of April 20-21 for the National Audubon Society The National Audubon Society is an American non-profit environmental organization dedicated to conservancy. Incorporated in 1905, it is one of the oldest of such organizations in the world.  Birdathon?

The Birdathon is the organization's annual fund-raiser to help support habitat restoration, educational programs, the national organization, the local group and the newsletter.

This is how it works.

You get a sponsor who will pledge a certain amount of money for each species that you spot. It could be as little as a quarter.

Count the number of species you see during a 24-hour period and collect your pledges! You can go anywhere you like. You can even park yourself in your back yard for the day.

Everyone has at least five people they can ask to be sponsors. Here they are:

- Yourself

- A family member

- Your neighbor

- A co-worker

- Your best friend

And, if you think about it, you'll come up with a bunch more possibilities!

If you are feeling ambitious, break out your Christmas card list and contact some friends, or even some long-lost relatives.

Ask your vet, your florist, your nursery person or your butcher. Hit up your doctor, dentist or attorney.

If you deal with local businesses and get them to sponsor you, we will publish their business cards in our Roadrunner roadrunner

Handling stress of test

Springtime is test time for college-bound students, and kids are stressed to their limits over SATs, college applications, entrance exams, and the need to keep up the old GPA GPA
abbr.
grade point average

Noun 1. GPA - a measure of a student's academic achievement at a college or university; calculated by dividing the total number of grade points received by the total number attempted
.

Here are a few tips to help your student deal with the stress:

- Students need a good night's sleep before tests. Waking refreshed helps daily performance, too.

- Students must arrive on time. No one will be admitted after tests begin.

- Parents, ignore morning situations sure to spike anxiety levels. Avoid arguments. Test-takers need to maintain a positive frame of mind.

Insist on a nutritious breakfast built on protein, instead of sugar. Energy from sugar dissipates too quickly.

Resist the impulse to lecture on the test's importance. Telling them what they already know can add to the tension.
