HOMELESS VETS STAND DOWN NEXT WEEKEND.

LANCASTER -Flags were raised Monday on a flagpole recently erected at Grace Resource Center, the local charity food bank.

In a solemn ceremony, Junior Air Force ROTC cadets from Lancaster High School Lancaster High School may refer to:

  • Lancaster High School (Lancaster, Texas) in Lancaster, Texas
  • Lancaster High School (Ohio) in Lancaster, Ohio
 positioned the banners, then saluted as the flags were raised 28 feet and unfurled high over the center's patio.

With fellow cadets, veterans and other guests standing at attention, Cadet Candice Fields sang the national anthem.

Steve Baker Steve Baker (born September 8, 1978 in Pontefract, West Yorkshire) is an English professional footballer who is a defender and currently plays for Gateshead.

Baker has played for a number of clubs including Middlesbrough, Huddersfield Town, Darlington, Hartlepool and
, director of the organization that provides 6,000 meals a month to the homeless and other indigents, ended the ceremony with a brief tribute.

The cadets included Lt. Col. Amanda Huntsman, Tim Freeman, Dannie Pederson, Jeannie Hydle, Louis Figueroa and Fields.

 Homeless Veterans Stand Down will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. , selected as a safe place where military veterans can address any problems that have kept them out of step with society.

``A person who lives in a place provided by a family member or friend, such as a garage without cooking facilities, is considered homeless,'' said chairman Steve Baker. ``It's a moot point moot point n. 1) a legal question which no court has decided, so it is still debatable or unsettled. 2) an issue only of academic interest. (See: moot) .''

``I think we should also point out that even veterans who are not technically homeless are welcome to attend if they have personal issues that need to be resolved,'' said local Veterans Affairs Veterans Affairs is a term of the business that deals with the relation between a government and its veteran communities, usually administered by the designated government agency.  officer Bob Ortiz.

A VIP reception is planned for 5 p.m. Thursday at the college.

Veterans can register beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, and there will be two meals, snacks and some activities and entertainment that night.

On Saturday, vets can get dental and eye checkups as well as help with legal problems. A Jewish religious service is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.

For evening entertainment, there will be music by Blind Date, an 18-piece band.

Sunday will feature closing ceremonies, with awards presented to each vet. Special commemorative medals for each participant have been crafted by Cindy Pratt.

Baker said he expects about 100 vets to show up.

Among the honored guests expected are state Sen. William J. ``Pete'' Knight, R-Palmdale, Assemblywoman Sharon Runner Sharon Runner (born May 17 1954, Los Angeles) is a Californian politician. She has been a member of the California State Assembly since 2002. Runner, a Republican from Antelope Valley represents the 36th district. , R-Lancaster, Mayor Frank Roberts of Lancaster and Mayor Jim Ledford of Palmdale.

Menus for the week at the senior life nutrition sites in Lancaster and Palmdale have been announced. All meals include bread, margarine and coffee, tea or milk for a suggested donation of $2. Reservations at least a day in advance are now required.
