Authorities said they'd previously issued warnings to the 30 or so transients living in the arroyo, which is subject to flash floods during rainstorms.

Members of Sonrise Christian Fellowship held a morning prayer rally, then stayed to offer moral support to the homeless men and women.

``They've become our friends down here,'' said church member Karen Dobson, who broke into tears when police and park officials arrived shortly before noon.

Police and district officials encouraged the transients to take advantage of Simi Valley's winter shelter program, which offers beds at local churches, and to visit the Samaritan Center, which is open weekdays for showers, breakfast, clean clothes and help in obtaining social services social services

``I don't have anywhere to go,'' said Marine, who has been living in the arroyo since September. ``I can't take my dog and puppies (to the shelter.)''
