Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, - Dozens of volunteers, as well as Mayor Laurene Weste, celebrated the opening of the city's winter homeless shelter Homeless shelters are temporary residences for homeless people. Usually located in urban neighborhoods, they are similar to emergency shelters. The primary difference is that homeless shelters are usually open to anyone, without regard to the reason for need. ``This is a beautiful little town and it's about helping people,'' Davis said. ``For three years we've operated a shelter and we know there's a need.'' Officials expect about 10 people to use the shelter's services the first few nights. Once the fire inspection is complete, the modular structures will hold up to 30 people. It's the first year for the shelter in modular buildings. Previously, the shelter operated in a city-owned building near the sports complex. The city contributed $35,000 toward leasing the buildings. The Andy Gump Corp. donated portable lavatories and a shower unit, as well as temporary power poles that allow for electricity in the shelter. Mike McFadden, SCCDC secretary, said the manner in which people contribute to helping the homeless is endless. ``You can contribute just about everything but a giraffe giraffe, African ruminant mammal, Giraffa camelopardalis, living in open savanna S of the Sahara. The tallest of animals, giraffes browse in treetops at heights inaccessible to other leaf-eaters. A male may be 18 ft (5.5 m) from hoof to crown. and we can use it,'' McFadden said, noting that volunteers' time is critical to the shelter's success. ``If you can do computer stuff, drive a nail, if you're a homemaker, we can use your help.'' Davis said about 2,000 people have helped with the city's homeless shelter since its inception three years ago. Much of the funding, he added, comes from fund raising, grants and the kindness of private donators. The shelter is open through April and requires a budget of $90,000 to operate. For information on the SCCDC and volunteer opportunities, a Web site - www.sccdc.org - is scheduled to launch by Thursday, organizers said.
