Byline: Kevin F. Sherry Daily News Staff Writer

Interviews are scheduled to begin this week in order to select the 10 homeless families who will soon take up residence at the Stoll Community House apartments.

``Essentially, it's done,'' said Lee Milman, the programs manager for Many Mansions, a nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

As workers finish up the landscaping, city officials are reviewing the building's handicapped accessibility, which should be the last step before the apartments are issued their certificate of occupancy A document issued by a local building or Zoning authority to the owner of premises attesting that the premises have been built and maintained according to the provisions of building or zoning ordinances, such as those that govern the number of fire exits or the safety of , said Dan Hardy, the executive director of Many Mansions.

The 10,318-square-foot complex will house 10 residential units and a managerial unit. The facility will provide on-site child care for its residents.

Many Mansions bought the land in September 1995 and built the two buildings from the ground up, Hardy said. Recent rains put the project about a month behind schedule.

The goal of the facility is to move people from homelessness to self-sufficiency in a year's time.

``What we're trying to accomplish is a big order,'' said Mary McLeod, Many Mansions associate director.

Many Mansions organizers estimate that stays at the home will last about nine months.

Residents will pay 30 percent of their income to the home as rent.

The home will fill a need in eastern Ventura County that many people do not want to admit exists, Hardy said.

``I think it's really a first for the city,'' he said. ``It's something that's desperately, desperately needed.''

In June, the City Council received a petition signed from 120 residents who expressed fear that the complex would attract crime. But the apartments will not have a drop-in shelter, and the strict application and occupancy rules should alleviate any concerns and make the home a plus for Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. ``I think the community will really be delighted,'' she said. ``It's for the people of this community.''
