PANORAMA CITY -- A 54-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing and beating death of a 92-year-old woman last year who was out collecting recyclables.

Bernell Ross of Sylmar is being held in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Jail on a murder charge in the death of Sophia Gomez. His bail is set at $1 million.

Ross, who police said was homeless, has a criminal record that includes convictions for drug possession.

Residents who discovered Gomez's body told police they saw her walking through the neighborhood every morning, picking up recyclables, although she did not appear to need the money.

She was neither homeless nor a transient, and neighbors were used to her early morning routine.
