SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. The Santa Clarita Community Development Corp. has operated a Santa Clarita shelter between Dec. 1 and mid-March for the past seven years. But it almost didn't open this year when the City Council declined to extend its lease at the Via Princessa Metrolink station, citing opposition from neighbors.

Several attempts by the city and the SCCDC over the years to relocate the shelter had failed.

In October, several alternative homeless plans emerged, including a controversial city-backed proposal that would have bused the homeless to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  shelters. But that was scrapped earlier this month when county Supervisor Michael D. Preheim said shelter volunteers did not expect to fill many beds over the Christmas holiday, but added they are prepared to house up to 40 people.

``Typically over Christmas we don't have a lot of people,'' she said. ``If families are going to let them stay with them at all, it's during Christmas.''

It costs about $42 a day to house one homeless person An individual who lacks housing, including one whose primary residence during the night is a supervised public or private facility that provides temporary living accommodations; an individual who is a resident in transitional housing; or an individual who has as a primary residence a . That pays for food, a cot and optional counseling, according to the SCCDC. The shelter will remain open through March 15.
