HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS PAST AND PRESENT PAIR UP FOR DISTINCTIVE HOMES TOUR.

Byline: Michelle J. Mills Staff Writer

For Ross Farrell, color is key when it comes to design. Take, for example, his guest room, bathed in a single hue of chili pepper red.

``It took about 15 coats to do the ceiling,'' Farrell said. ``My painter almost walked off the job.''

His 2,100-square-foot 1920s California Spanish-style home is one of six on view today and Sunday, as part of the Pasadena Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the oldest and largest professional association for interior designers. Through education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, community building and outreach, the Society strives to advance the interior design profession and, in the  20th annual homes tour.

Originally called the Kitchens & Interiors Tour, the event has branched out to include more rooms in each of the six stops. There will also be informal design lectures both days and a boutique.

Although this is his first year participating in the tour, Farrell, an interior designer and ASID ASID American Society of Interior Designers

He emphasizes the use of unifying colors in his designs. ``I like using really rich dark tones and more earthy tones,'' Farrell said.

His living room has chocolate-brown walls and richly dark furnishings. In contrast are the capiz-shell chandeliers that offer light and a bit of old-Hollywood glamour.

He also loves a vintage 1920s chair that he revived with nailheads for style and mohair mohair, hair of the Angora goat or a large group of fabrics made from it, either wholly or in combination with wool, silk, or cotton. The Angora goat, native of Asia Minor for 2,000 years, is bred in other lands, e.g., the SW United States and South Africa.  for comfort. ``It's called the Koko chair, after my cat,'' Farrell said.

Farrell's passion for color shows in the other rooms in his house, each done in a single hue, walls and ceilings the same color. In the yellow kitchen, the cabinets are painted to match.

Designing doesn't mean deciding everything at the beginning. Farrell likes to create as he goes along. ``It's more like I just build.''

Other homes on view

In addition to Farrell's home, there will be five other residences on the tour:
