Catching a fish that weighs more than twice as much as your boat should win you some kind of prize, but what DeSantis, who lives in Oxnard, got instead was a passion for kayak fishing.

On Sunday, DeSantis was hoping his fishing luck would strike twice as he tried to win a new kayak - first prize at Jerry Esten's Kayak Fishing Derby at King Harbor at Redondo Beach Redondo Beach (rĭdŏn`dō), city (1990 pop. 60,167), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1892. Once a commercial port for Los Angeles, it is a residential and resort city with a protected harbor and an excellent marina. . His thresher wouldn't have helped, as skates, sharks and rays don't count. A big halibut halibut: see flatfish.

would likely win the derby, which is in its seventh year.

DeSantis started fishing at 5 a.m. with Jeff Krieger, the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  kayak-fishing guru who helped DeSantis land his shark. Conditions were good with no wind and flat seas, but there was no bait at the bait receiver in the harbor so DeSantis fished lures.

at Hermosa Reef in about 60 feet,'' DeSantis said. He landed a 4 1/2-pound sand bass - his first fish of the day - and thought he might have a chance at a prize but knew he probably needed a bigger fish to win.

Dan Doyel of Mission Hills loves kayak fishing, too. He launched his boat at 7:30 and fished his way a mile south of King Harbor with his brother. Doyel was fishing a live sardine sardine: see herring.

``I was turning around to move to another spot when I hooked up,'' Doyel said. When he landed an 8.7-pound halibut, he decided he might have the winning fish, so Doyel paddled back to the dock and had it weighed.

Word that Doyel's big fish already was on ice circulated via VHF radio VHF radio refers to several communications services in the VHF frequency range, including:
  • Airband aircraft radio
  • Amateur radio in the 6, 2 and 1-1/4 meter bands
  • FM radio broadcasts

among the other kayak anglers. It was obvious from the chatter on the marine band that many kayak anglers know each other.

They've fished together along the Southern California coastline in the no-man's land No-Man's land Hand surgery A fanciful term for the fibrous sheath of the flexor tendons of the hand, specifically in the zone from the distal palmar crease to the proximal interphalangeal joint. See Rule of threes.  between surf fishers and powerboats. They've invented new ways to outfit their kayaks, and some have made a business of selling their inventions to other kayak anglers. They've loaded their plastic craft with electronic fish finders, rod holders and even battery-operated live bait wells.

Many kayak anglers are graduates of party-boat fishing. But they welcome the exercise, the oneness with nature and the sense of control that comes with fishing from a kayak. Plus, there are some places a party boat just won't go.

Virtually all kayak anglers paddle sit-on-top kayaks. They're not as fast as the sleek sit-inside touring kayaks but more stable. Gear is easier to stow and access, and if it proves to be warm day, you even can slip off the boat for a dip.

``Nothing compares to kayak fishing,'' DeSantis said. ``You can spend more time on the water because you can fish whenever you want to; day, night, afternoon, you don't have to rely on a party-boat schedule. If you put in your time, you can catch a lot of fish.''

This year, 40 paddle anglers showed up hoping to catch one big fish at the event that's part tournament and part a gathering of the brotherhood of the kayak. Jerry Esten of Northridge, who organizes the derby, credits the Internet with helping spread the word about his tournament, plus the fact all participants walk away with some sort of swag thanks to a long list of sponsors.

Prizes to seventh place were awarded for the biggest single fish. ``Quantities of fish are of no interest here and only serve to deplete de·plete

the resource,'' it said in the contest rules.

``I think the essence of the event was the camaraderie and the building of a network of people who can call each other,'' Esten said after the first event. He said that hasn't changed because kayak anglers depend on each other. ``You're in a little tiny boat in a big ocean,'' Esten said. ``It's nice to have a friend around.''

Ocean Kayaks, the company that launched the sit-on-top revolution in kayaking in 1971, used the derby as an opportunity to promote their new boat, the Prowler, which is designed with kayak anglers in mind.

Mark Olson Mark Olson may refer to:
  • Mark Olson (musician) (born 1961), U.S. country singer-songwriter since the 1980s
  • Mark Douglas Olson (20th century), U.S. politician, Minnesota state legislator

, a rep for Ocean Kayaks, said the company worked with kayak-fishing guides in the design of the Prowler and donated one as the grand prize for Esten's contest.

``Jerry's a good guy. He's been doing this for a long time,'' Olson said. ``We're lucky to have him.''

The Prowler boasts longer length - more than 15 feet - to cover distance faster, big hatches to stow gear, several spots built to accommodate tackle boxes, rod-holder mounts and a rear-deck well sized to fit live bait wells or the plastic milk crates many anglers use for gear. And because many kayak anglers seem to run to XXL XXL Extra Extra Large

Several new Prowlers were in the water. As the 1 p.m. weigh-in time approached, all of the kayakers paddled for the dock.

In the end, Doyel's almost 9-pound flattie flattie
