``She seems really sweet,'' said Issleib, describing the horse with a black mane mane

and a black tail and a white star on its nose. ``She just came right up to me.''

Issleib purchased the horse for $125 and hopes to train it to be ridden by her children, including her 5-year-old daughter who was anxious to take the animal home and feed it.

``She's going to be a family pet for a while,'' Issleib said. ``It's going to take time. We're planning on gentling her.''

The adoption is part of the government's effort to save the lives of wild horses rounded up in Nevada's high desert and California's Eastern Mojave that compete with ranchers' cattle on public lands in the West.

``It's a good opportunity for the horse because they need a good home,'' said Issleib, who along with her husband had horses when they were younger. ``It's a good program.''

Of the 112 horses and burros available for adoption in Lancaster, 82 had been purchased by noon Sunday.

``That's really good,'' said Mindy Odom, a Bureau of Land Management wild horses and burro burro: see ass.  specialist, adding that the remaining horses will travel to other states and placed for adoption again. ``They'll go from one place to another until they find a home.''
