HOME DEPOT OFFERS EMERGENCY DO-IT-YOURSELF REPAIR ADVICE
MIAMI, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Home Depot's stores in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Andrew are advising customers of materials and methods to construct temporary roofs.
Home Depot experts stress the importance of protecting the remaining lumber as continued exposure will weaken the exposed wood. Temporary roofing can be added to structurally sound homes to make them weathertight and stop further deterioration.
Poly-film, roll felt paper, mineral surface roll roofing and pre- cemented roll roofing can all be utilized for temporary roofing.
Poly-film is the least expensive and easiest to install. The film is unrolled and lengths of inch-wide wooden batten strips are nailed over the film to secure.
Roll felt paper is a material commonly used underneath shingles, but can be used alone as temporary roofing.
Mineral surface roll roofing has a grainy texture similar to shingles, but is easier to install because it comes in rolls. It's also hardier than felt paper.
Pre-cemented roll roofing needs no nails. It has a pre-treated surface that allows the material to automatically adhere to the roof.
In homes with no beams, and in areas where plywood and lumber is scarce, metal roofing is an alternative. It's better than most temporary materials at protecting homes from inclement weather.
Home Depot stores in areas affected by the hurricane are offering materials and installation advice for many emergency home repair jobs.
