HOME DEPOT INVITATIONAL: SHOT PUT IS SCENE OF ACTION.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

CARSON - Shot putter Christian Caldwell stood tall on a day when Marion Jones Marion Jones, also known as Marion Jones-Thompson (born October 12, 1975 in Los Angeles, California), is an American former athlete in track and field. She was the winner of five medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, which she later relinquished after  and Maurice Greene Maurice Greene may refer to:

Caldwell's mark of 73 feet, 4 inches was the best in the world so far this year and moved him into 10th on the all-time world performers list. All six throws by the 2004 IAAF IAAF

Jones continued her comeback after a year off because of pregnancy, winning the 100 in 10.99 seconds and the long jump at 23 feet, 4 3/4 inches - her longest jump since 1998. Greene elicited the biggest reaction from the crowd after running to victory in the 100 in 9.86, pushed by a 4.6 wind, to equal the fastest time in the world under any conditions.

After the race, the Chatsworth resident blew on his ``spikes'' and training partner Larry Wade Larry Wade (born 22 November 1974 in Giddings) is an American track and field athlete who specializes in the 110 metres hurdles.

Although the 6-foot-6, 290-pound Cantwell didn't attract the attention of Jones and Greene while throwing on the far end of the track, his shot- put series ranks among the greatest ever.

runner-up for Missouri, opened with efforts of 71-1 1/4 and 71-11 3/4 on his first two throws before unleashing a personal-best 73-4 on his third attempt. Cantwell posted marks of 70- 1/2, 70-5 and 70-4 1/2 on his final three throws.

``My first three throws, I threw really well,'' Cantwell said. ``The last three throws, I had come down from my high after throwing a big throw like that. Those were nice easy throws with no adrenaline.

``That just lets me know that I am in tremendous shape. Seventy-three might not be my best. I don't think it was as much intensity as the throw before it. If I can get that relaxation and intensity, then I think that we can see some really big throw.''

Cantwell didn't have much of an opportunity to relax with Reese Hoffa, who finished second at 71-1 1/4. It was the second consecutive year that Hoffa, who competed as the ``Unknown Shot Putter'' in 2003 with a wrestling mask, has thrown a career best at the Home Depot meet.

Three-time world champion John Godina was third at 69-0 with 2000 Olympic silver medalist Adam Nelson fourth at 67-11 3/4.
