U.S. Government medical facilities are the largest healthcare provider in the U.S., operating nearly 300 hospitals and many more outpatient clinics.

The VA award was based on best value and the unique capability of Hologic's proprietary flat panel technology, DirectRay, that utilizes amorphous selenium selenium (səlē`nēəm), nonmetallic chemical element; symbol Se; at. no. 34; at. wt. 78.96; m.p. 217°C;; b.p. about 685°C;; sp. gr. 4.81 at 20°C;; valence −2, +4, or +6. , a semi conductor that allows the capture and conversion of x-rays to electrical signals in a single step, avoiding any resolution deterioration inherent from light scatter in indirect technologies such as conventional screen-film or computed radiography systems. The National Acquisition Center award included two Hologic digital X-ray systems built to optimize amorphous selenium technology: the RADEX RADEX Radar Data Extractor

, designed for ambulatory and outpatient radiography and the EPEX, used for the full range of general radiography exams. The agreement also includes digital upgrades built around the Hologic detector and Hologic's Inverse Topography software, which allows radiologists to look at both soft tissue and bone detail in the same hard or soft copy image.
