HOLLYWOOD PARK MIXES PAST, FUTURE.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

Hollywood Park Hollywood Park may be several places:
  • Hollywood Park, Texas
  • Hollywood Park, Chicago, a neighborhood in Chicago
  • Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California
  • Hollywood Park Racetrack, Thoroughbred race track in Inglewood, California
begins its short autumn season today with a nod to the past and a headlong charge into the future.

The opening-day feature races are minor turf stakes named for four-footed heroes of the Inglewood track's recent history, the $70,000 Steinlen Handicap and the $54,000 Itsallgreektome Stakes. Steinlen, in 1989, and Itsallgreektome, in 1990, won national turf championships.

Each race includes a contender representing trainer Neil Drysdale and jockey Kent Desormeaux Kent J. Desormeaux (born February 27, 1970, in Maurice, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana) is an American thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame jockey who holds the U.S. record for most races won in a single year. , the most successful team at the Oak Tree meet that ended Monday at Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:
  • Santa Anita Park in California, USA
  • Santa Anita, Mexico holy site in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico
. Drysdale and Desormeaux have 5-year-old Tamhid in the Steinlen and 3-year-old Bodyguard in the Itsallgreektome.

The nine-race card starts at 12:30 p.m.

The most noticeable changes at the 60-year-old track are $600,000 in improvements of facilities for simulcast bettors, who have become the backbone of the racing industry and are about to become more important. Included are the addition of 500 television sets in areas of the grandstand and clubhouse, bringing the total to more than 4,000, and the addition of 700 new work spaces for handicappers, nearly doubling that total.

The changes are being made in anticipation of a Jan. 1 change in state law that will allow California tracks to take bets on full racing cards from out of state. Until then, tracks here are restricted to selected races from other states and full cards from outside the country.

Starting in January, California tracks are expected to take races from Gulfstream Park Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino is a racetrack and county-approved racino in Hallandale Beach, Florida, in the United States.
